5 things to try this August

I love trying out new things and seeing what’s possible. Sometimes it’s the little changes that can make a difference or lead to a breakthrough. Here are 5 things to try that have helped me or that have been really fun to do.

Most of us make resolutions in January – the coldest, wettest, poorest month! Summer is a great time to make a change, especially if you’re going on holiday or having a few days away. For many of us, that break from the daily grind provides a chance to take stock of our daily lives and think about what we could do differently. Your summer resolution doesn’t have to be big, nor does it have to be drink related. It can be anything that’s going to make you healthier, happier and more confident.

Subscribe to a podcast

I’m a podcast addict. I listen to them whilst I’m driving, walking, doing the ironing … they’re entertaining, inspirational and can be a great way to learn from people who’ve been there and done it. My favourite sobriety related podcasts are The Bubble Hour and AfterPartyPod.

Try a spa day

Looking after ourselves and finding new ways of relaxing is an important part of drinking less. At this time of year you can get some great deals on one-day spa trips. They’re fun to do with friends or go it alone for a bit of ‘me time’.

Read a book

Really challenge yourself to read an inspirational book from cover to cover this month. Set a timer on your phone and get in at least 15 minutes a day and you will be surprised how quickly you will go through a book. One of my favourites is ‘Unwasted – My Lush Sobriety’ by Sacha Z. Scoblic and I’ve heard very good things about the new book ‘Blackout’ by Sarah Hepola.

Create a vision board

A vision board is a great way of capturing what you’d like your life to feel like and look like. Amazing images and inspirational quotes will motivate you when you’re feeling down. Pinterest is great for this. Just remember to create a secret board if you don’t want other people to see it.

Hi, I'm Kate

I founded The Sober School to show you there’s another way out of your shame that doesn’t involve AA or rehab.

  1. Really glad I found this website. It’s nice to know that my struggles are shared by many others. That my experiences with alcohol are shared by many. I enjoy reading it, it keeps me motivated and I love your suggestions. Thank you so much. I feel like I have a safe place to reach out and talk

  2. 4 days sober, i just found your site..this is the time of day I would be opening my first bottle of wine,, it’s 6;04pm actually if I was with a friend it would be our second.

  3. If you like The Bubble Hour and AfterParty Chat (and, really, who doesn’t?) be sure to check out the podcast that is a sort of unholy mashup of those two: The Since Right Now Addiction Recovery Pod. I was specifically inspired by Ellie & Co. of TBH and Anna of APC to start our irreverent little recovery pod. http://SinceRightNow.com/pdcst

What These Sober Women Want You To Know
There are so many things I wish I’d known about alcohol-free living before I quit.  Back then, I was convinced my life was basically going to be over, if I couldn’t drink.  Without alcohol, I thought I’d either die of boredom or I’d become...

My Name’s Kate And I’m Not An Alcoholic
In my drinking days, I must have googled “Am I an alcoholic?” so many times.  I didn’t think I actually was an alcoholic, but my drinking certainly didn’t feel “normal”. I was stuck, not finding anything that described me or what to do next.  Fast...
